When you create a Supply Depot , the game will use your mobile device's geolocation feature to figure out where you physically are, and then show you a list of "real life" businesses nearby. You can also search for other businesses not in the list, though they need to be within a certain radius (~30 km/20 miles) from you; you can't search for Powell's City of Books in Portland, OR from Vancouver, BC.
The further away that a supply depot's "real world" business is from you, the longer each supply run takes, but the more supplies you earn per run. The following table details the approximate distance away businesses can be, as well as how long a supply run takes and how many supplies you earn:
